Civil Wars in History Keynotes
Despite much scholarly attention to the widespread phenomenon of internal armed conflicts, comparative histories of civil wars remain a remarkably under-developed area of historical research, particularly for Europe in the modern period. The conference organisers sought to address this by considering the origins, forms, and consequences of civil wars across time and space, thereby bringing scholars from different disciplines (Sociology, Politics, History, and Literature) together.
The perils of adolescent activism during the Irish Revolution
In this podcast Dr Marnie Hay provides an introduction to uniformed youth groups during the Irish Revolution and highlights some examples of the potentially perilous activities undertaken by adolescents during the years 1916-23 and the serious consequences these teenage activists faced.
Life Histories and Social Change Archive
Life Histories and Social Change is a large collection of qualitative life story interviews with three cohorts of Irish citizens: those born between 1) 1916-1934; 2) 1945-1954; and 3) 1965-1974. Jane Gray, Seán Ó Riain, and Aileen O’Carroll developed the project, funded by the Irish Research Council, and researchers from NUI Maynooth conducted a total of 113 life history interviews between 2006 and 2008.
