In episode seven of History Hub’s podcast series – ‘Kingdom, Empire and Plus Ultra: conversations on the history of Portugal and Spain, 1415-1898‘ – Professor Jorge Cañizares-Esguerra discusses Old Testament culture of the Spanish Monarchy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the impact of a distinct Converso – or Jewish convert – culture that suffused all aspects of the Spanish Empire.
In November 2016 the Irish Legal History Society marked the 800th anniversary of the transmission of Magna Carta to Ireland with a conference. Law and the Idea of Liberty in Ireland: from Magna Carta to the present took place in Christ Church Cathedral. The event saw 12 speakers from Ireland and the UK present papers on the influence of Magna Carta in Ireland.
In episode 6 of ‘Kingdom, Empire and Plus Ultra: conversations on the history of Portugal and Spain, 1415-1898‘, Professor Onésimo T. Almeida (Brown) is in conversation with series host Dr Edward Collins on the topic of ‘Portugal and the Dawn of Modernity, 1419-1620’.
The 2016 conference saw History Hub continue its successful partnership with Tudor and Stuart Ireland with the production of podcasts of conference proceedings.
‘1916 and Me/2016 and Us’ is an attempt to uncover what 1916 means today, parsing the motivations which inspire people to commemorate the momentous events of that year.
