Connecting past and present
The Royal College of Science for Ireland (RCSI) represents a unique part of Ireland’s scientific heritage. The establishment of the College in 1876 (which was located in what is now Government Buildings on Merrion Street from 1911) marked a key moment in the development of science education in Ireland.
During his tour of the United States (1919-1920), de Valera visited the Chippewa Reservation Reserve in Wisconsin on 18 October 1919. He was made honorary chief of a Chippewa tribe of Indians.
The papers of Desmond and his wife, Mabel, FitzGerald are contained in one collection at UCD Archives, which also includes an extensive photographic collection relating largely to the Civil War.
This log book (courtesy of the Patrick Hillery Papers, UCD Archives) contains details of calls made to the President on the night when Garret FitzGerald’s Fine Gael-Labour coalition lost a Budget vote. The leader of the opposition, Charles Haughey, sought to contact Patrick Hillery to ask him not to dissolve the Dáil, but instead to ask Mr. Haughey to form a government.
